The 780i motherboard will handle any Core 2 processor, dual or quad.

Click on specifications.

Socket 775 motherboards that are designed for use only with Core 2 Duo processors lack the voltage regulation circuitry needed for use with quad core processors. That motherboard does not have that limitation, and is fully compatible with any Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad.

Here's an example of a socket 775 motherboard that can use a Core 2 Duo, but is not compatible with a Core 2 Quad. See specs.

Any motherboard that has a LGA775 socket will accommodate the Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.

The motherboard you listed has an LGA 775 socket -- in short yes, it supports the Core 2 Quad.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_T for a list of CPU's supported by this socket.

You'll look for the LGA775 socket if you want a Core 2 Quad CPU.

You'll want a motherboard with a AM3 socket if you want an AMD PHENOM x3 or X4 CPU.
