My ex-employer refuses to cancel my old visa. Is there a way to work around this?

I was on a 3 month mission visa to Abu Dhabi. There, I found a new job and wanted to join once my old visa ended. I hear now that I cannot receive my new visa unless I get a cancellation of the old one, even though that visa has expired. Is there a way around this?
